Checkout Lane: Consider patio furniture made from recycled plastics – The Patriot Ledger

Your patio furniture can be green even if your lawn isn’t green yet. Chairs and tables made from recycled plastics have become popular for decks and patios.
“I’ve never had a product take off and be as hot as poly lumber furniture,” said Joel Jordan, owner of Unfinished Business furniture store in Hanover. “It’s just absolutely overtaken the wood.”
Poly lumber is a wood substitute made from recycled plastic that requires no maintenance, said Jordan. It can be pigmented in any color, and UV inhibitors prevent colors from fading in the sun.
He said a wooden Adirondack chair costs $125 to $200, and poly lumber chairs cost $250 to $500.
Jordan also sells hybrid furniture that is 80 percent poly lumber and slightly less expensive.
The level of maintenance should be a major consideration when buying, said Greg Cady, manager of Pool and Patio Specialists in Westwood.
Cushions are no longer made of vinyl, so they need to be covered or stored during bad weather. Pool and Patio Specialists carries chairs with a thin layer of quick-drying fabric pulled tight over an aluminum frame, Cady said.
He said he sells a lot of cast aluminum – solid, heavy furniture that does not rust – as well as teak and wicker.
Cady said buyers should also consider how much space they have, and how many people will use the furniture regularly.
Internet prices might be lower than in stores, but trying out a chair before buying can help customers make the right choice.
“Everything hits your back differently,” Cady said. “Every chair is different for every person.”
